Corporate Social Responsibility
To Accell Group Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) means to be aware of societal developments and take these into consideration for its products and activities. Accell Group produces a sustainable product that contributes to a healthy lifestyle and CO2 emission reduction. An important part of the company's mission is to organize production as friendly as possible for both humans and the environment. Accell Group engages its stakeholders in the development and implementation of its CSR policy, is transparent about its CSR approach and reports on level C of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), version 3.1.
Accell Group takes a broad view of its social and environmental responsibility and actively responds to the key current and sustainable trends and developments. These include climate change, the finite nature of the earth’s resources, an increasing wealth of the world’s population with the resultant mobility issues in large cities and increasing demand for sustainable mobility. On the other hand an aging population looking to remain healthy and active for a long time, plus the steady increase in so-called first-world diseases, partly because many people do not get enough exercise. In the coming years, Accell Group will focus on the following four priorities:
- increasing the sustainability of the company’s own operations to make Accell Group a trendsetter in the sector in the field of sustainable innovation;
- in light of its key position in the value chain, Accell Group accepts responsibility for encouraging its suppliers, dealers and clients to operate in a sustainable fashion. After all, Accell Group is a key link between these groups
- as a major player, Accell Group also feels responsible for the common interests of the sector as a whole. Accell Group considers certain elements of its CSR policy as pre-competitive and believes these benefit most from a sector-wide approach. Accell Group will take the lead in key collective issues, such as CSR in the supply chain;
- people are the heart of the organisation and Accell Group strives to create a stimulating environment for its employees: fun, safety, health and development.
Accell Group’s organisational structure consists of a broad spectrum of small and medium-sized enterprises ranging from 20 to 400 employees. Accell Group Holding is the owner of these companies. The companies are highly responsible for operational business, primarily for the positioning of their brand(s) in their respective markets. Together with the holding the strategy and connected CSR policy is determined and designed. To coordinate the CSR policies and activities Accell Group has founded a CSR network with representatives from all Accell companies, called ACSI (Accell Corporate Sustainable Initiative).
Accell Group contributes to sustainable mobility by offering the bicycle as a sustainable means of transport. Hence, innovation and promoting a healthy lifestyle are important themes to Accell’s core business. For instance, Accell has introduced the electric bicycle to facilitate the mobility of people with physical limitations. In addition, the company supports initiatives that encourage the youth to stay physically active as a way to battle overweight. Detailed information is provided on the Sustainable Product page.
Accell Group wants to be a good employer by offering its employees a safe, healthy and challenging working environment. To meet employees’ needs, Accell Group provides an open corporate culture with good training and career opportunities. Furthermore, extra attention is paid to employees with a longer distance to the labour market as Accell Group works together with various sheltered employment organisations. Detailed information is provided on the Our Employees page.
CO2 and Energy
Accell Group aims to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emission both in its production activities and in its transport movements. The internal energy consumption of Accell is calculated in line with the GRI indicator which includes all energy sources used within the organization (e.g. electricity, natural gas and other energy sources). Next to reducing energy usage, attention is paid to the reduction of CO2 resulting from travelling. One of the means to facilitate the above mentioned reductions is through the use of webinars. Detailed information concerning CO2 and Energy targets and activities is provided on the C02 and Energy page.
Material Use, Waste flows and Recycling
Accell Group wants to increase the proportion of sustainable materials in its products. Sustainable materials can be recycled efficiently, comprise recyclable raw materials and have other, yet to be determined, sustainable properties. Accell Group wants to maximise the recycling of the materials it uses. The company uses smart design to increase the effective use and recycling of sustainable materials. The amount of packaging in the value chain, from supplier right through to dealer, has to be reduced and we encourage the use of used and out-of-demand parts. Detailed information is provided on Material use, Waste flows and Recycling page.
Accell Group wants to operate in compliance with REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restrictions of Chemical substances) and work only with registered substances, under the correct conditions and with the right protection measures in place. Where possible, Accell Group operates with alternative materials without hazardous substances. Any adverse effects of working with hazardous substances are eliminated where possible. Detailed information is provided on the Chemicals page.
Supply Chain Responsibility
As one of the leading companies in the international bicycle industry and member of the Board of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI), Accell Group initiated the implementation of international supply chain responsibility in this sector. In addition, the Accell Group has implemented a Code of Conduct for its suppliers, by which they are committed to comply with internationally accepted standards for labour rights and human rights.
